THE LISTING
About this vehicle
Offered for sale is my 1975 Austin GTMI bought this recently to add to my collection of classics and to go to some Classic Car Shows during the high summer which alas is now over so I am reducing my "Stable" in readiness for a new "Toy" next summer.Firstly I'm not going to wax lyrical on GTM's because if you're looking at this Ad you probably know more about them than me but there's plenty online to discover if you wish to do some research. The CarI have to say what attracted me to this car was its striking visuals, its vibrant orange colourway and its deminutive Marcos like appearance add to that, rear engined and rear wheel drive is clearly a recipe for fun.The GTM is a hand built Kit car based upon 2 mini front subframes with the engine moved to the rear and a Fibreglass body shell, being fibreglass apart from weight saving the car can be stored outside if you don't have a garage as the absence of large amounts of body metal keeps tin worm at bay. Each GTM is hand built and unique with individual builders putting their own stamp on their vehicles. What I find quirky about this car is the single rear wing passenger side air duct which feeds the oil cooler at the rear and the rear circular lights
Condition/MechanicalsPrior to my purchase ,the GTM had undergone a series of recommissioning following a long period of inactivityThere is limited paperwork /history with the car but what I can determine is that the following are new or refurbed
- Front and Rear LED lights
- New alloy fuel Tank
- Red Bucket seats
- Seat Belt Harnesses
- Roll Bar
- GPS Speedo (+ original cable speedo) both read similar
- Refurbed 13" alloys with good tread tyres
The Fibreglass body is very good for a 50 year old car and looks like its been sprayed recently, fuel tank, radiator and fan in the front ~ engine, oil cooler and oil cooler fan in the rear. The rear engine lids opens in part and gives access to a small boot storage area and removing the lid completely gives full access to the engine bay.The car is Twin Carb'd with Pancake air filters,V5C states 1340 cc, Mini engines of the period were 1275 cc so guess the engine has been worked upon (who knows ?) suffice to say the car certainly moves and has performed faultlessly under my ownership. The engine shows good oil pressure and is very "Peppy" which is hardly surprising given the cars lightweight nature.I have done a fair few miles this summer and can find little negative to say about the car, It starts via a push button drives, stops changes gear etc with just the synchro change into 4th can be a little weak if you go all out "Street Racer" mode and the nearside door could do with some adjustment but works fine in any case. One things for sure it certainly doesn't go unnoticed when its out and about on the road.
SummaryThe car is classed as Historic and therefore VED and MOT exempt with classic car insurance costing me £59 paClearly the car is over 50 years old so be realistic with your expectations, its never going to drive like a new car but if your after a bit of Automotive fun on the cheap, something that you can live with and repair relatively cheaply (mini parts),then you might have found your new classic. For the benefit of doubt I am not a mechanic, and cannot warranty or guarantee against any defect on the GTM nor I suppose anyone would given its 50 years old. Please satisfy yourself as to the cars condition prior to purchase as no warranty is implied or given. As a point to note any purchase needs to be made via bank transfer and will only take place following dialogue after I,ve accepted a bid. Any perspective purchaser can either contact me via the ask a question function of via contact number in this addViewings welcome by arrangement in Knaresborough North Yorkshire.
UPDATEFollowing a viewing inspection I failed to get the car to start, Initially I thought it may be the battery as the cars been idle for 4-6 weeks and the battery was flat, I fully charged the battery and still could not get the car to fully turn over on the starter, Jump leads still did not remedey. I therefore feel that the issue is with the starter motor although a possible weak/underpowered battery may not be helping. (Its been running fine all summer)I think this is a simple fix for the mechanically mined but as I am more of a Spanner Flunky rather than Spanner Monkey I am selling as a non runner as any remedial action will only cost me in money and time.In an effort to expidite a quick sale I have reduced the asking price more than enough to make it viable for any purchaser
