THE LISTING
About this vehicle
My VX220 "AK51LTZ" is in largely original condition, roadworthy, without any engine/suspension mods, and has never been involved in a RTA. It is currently Insured, Taxed and has a Mot until March 2027. It is located in Chelmsford, EssexPlease see my pictures and read my description below, so that if you bid and win the auction, you can be clear about what to expect when you come to collect it. I hope to include everything that I consider significant, so you can make your decision to bid with confidence in the vehicle. The auction winner will be expected to come to inspect and collect the car. I will include a test drive (with me driving) if you wish. Payment to be by bank transfer on collection. Please feel free to ask questions via ebay messaging if you need more detail on specific aspects.
Also included:
- Two Ignition keys and Alarm Fobs
- OEM Full Rain Cover
- All original paperwork, owners manual, service history etc
- Receipts for all parts and work undertaken
- Current and past MOT certificates
- Battery Trickle charger
History:
- I have owned this VX220 since Jan 2002, (24 years).
- It was bought with 800 miles on the clock from Vauxhall Thurlow Nunn at Kings Lynn, after being their demonstrator car.
- The current odometer reading, as I write this, is 92742 miles driven solely on UK roads (never tracked), I may put a few more miles on by the time it is sold but it won't be much.
- Mileage was largely travelling to and from work, which were journey's of 40+ miles each way, Motorways and A roads, once or twice a week.
- It has never been involved in any RTA (road traffic accident)
- It has been a 1st rate car to own, but my yearly mileage rate has now dropped significantly since I retired, and I no longer have a good reason to keep it.
Servicing:
- The car has been regularly serviced throughout it's life using Vauxhall and independent garages.
- Vauxhall recommend Annual services or after every 10,000 miles.
- Current mileage now is 92742.
- Service book contains 12 stamps and invoices available to show service history.
- It has done less than 2500 miles in the last 6 years.
- The last service (with oil change) was October 2024 @ 92271m .
- Last Brake fluid change was May 2022 @ 91317 m.
MOTs:
- Current MOT until March 2027
- Contains two advisories: "Wheel Bearing has slight play Offside Front" and "Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge Nearside Rear"
- The tester said that the wheel bearing advisory was unlikely to cause an issue for some time as the movement was very slight.
- I have all the MOT certificates from the first in 2004 to the current.
- The only gaps in this are 11 months in 2008/09 when I forgot to get it done (yes honestly), and Oct 2025 to Mar 2026 when I delayed due to an two advisory notices that I had not addressed from the MOT in Mar 2024.
- The unaddressed advisories in 2024 were "Slight play in the Steering linkage ball joint (nearside front)" and "Slight play in Suspension arm ball joint (Offside Front)". The car passed MOT in Mar 2026 without those advisories having being addressed, and the tester said his opinion was that no movement was detectable.
Exterior:
- Paintwork is the original Metallic Silver and I have not seen any signs of blistering. The car has been garaged for most of it's life. Naturally there are a few stone chips and other surface imperfections, but nothing that I think would put off any buyer.
- Windscreen is the original, and like the bodywork has a few chips, mostly repaired using Autoglass. The windscreen has never failed the MOT.
- The Driver's door was replaced in 2004 after I damaged the edge of the original whilst rolling the car out of the garage with the door open. The repair and paintwork on that was professionally done by Fullbridge Restoration Company in Maldon, under insurance, and is to me indistinguishable from the rest of the car, please see photo's.
- There is very minor damage to the front clam (nearside front wheel arch - see photo). It has a slight vertical split on the wheel arch and paint scrape on the lower panel. I caught it on the stone walling on my driveway a long time ago.
- The offside headlight unit has some internal heat damage (as per picture) - this is not an MOT failure and does not affect the lamps functioning. I have recently fitted LED lamps to reduce the heat build up - I drive with dipped headlights on all the time.
- The original soft top in blue still does a very good job of keeping the weather out, it is not quite as easy to fit as it once was, but then again neither is it difficult (requiring two hands rather than one).
Interior:
- Original Blue Leather seats and door trim, no tears, but naturally after 92k some wear exists. Drivers seat has inflatable lumbar support, and reach is adjustable (forward and back).
- Drivers seat has an additional slip-over padded head rest in matching blue leather - I'm tall, and never liked the thought of contact with the hard plastic, foam filled, head protectors, mounted on the roll bar in the event of an accident.
- The car interior is fairly basic with much bare aluminium on show. Some plastic panels (door cards, Gear/Handbrake tunnel cover) were painted in a soft touch silver paint, which over the years has become rather grubby. Many VX owners cover these with material, I have not done so.
- The detachable VDO radio/cd player is factory standard, I did replace the speakers some while back.
- Drivers upper seat belt mount has a plastic cover which has broken/missing, it would be quite easy to source another I am sure, but it is not a MOT item.
- Temperature control panel is fully functional, with 3 fan speeds, selectable windscreen and footwell air venting, and temperature control (although this could do with a re-alignment).
- The 5 lighting switches are all functional - Push On/Push Off (Sides, Main, Front Fog, Rear Fog, Hazard), although some of the illumination bulbs have blown, I have been in the process of converting these bulb's to LED's but have not completed that yet. Spare LED/resistors and instruction will be supplied, for you to complete the job if you wish to. The switches are difficult/pricy to obtain, so some home repairs have been required.
- The driver side sill cover (plastic) is an OEM replacement, but has slightly different texture to the passenger side original.
- All dashboard fuel gauge, warning lights, speedo, odometer, trip and rev counter fully working.
Engine/Mechanicals:
- Has been extremely reliable and very little work has been required.
- I have fitted an improved oil filter housing gasket, the original metal gasket was prone to leak if the filter housing was accidentally undone when changing the oil filter (paper type).
- The coolant header tank was replaced after it split, and now has a UV protective covering to prevent sun damage again.
- The original heater unit has been replaced with a much improved T7Design unit, which unfortunately does complicate battery removal.
- The radiator fan mounting brackets were replaced many years ago with some aluminium ones, this required the removal of the front clam (the one and only time it has been done). The rear clam has never been removed.
- The car has done some 92k, and many VX owners have suggested that the timing chain should be replaced by 100k, Vauxhall do not specify a renewal mileage. That is quite involved, usually requiring removal of the rear clam to gain access to the engine. (Anticipate £1200-£1500 cost).
- There is a small crack in the exhaust manifold, originally identified in 2013 (documented on service sheet). This does not affect the MOT's as it is not visible. The crack closes quite quickly as the engine warms. On cold starting it gives a slightly throaty sound - quite a good sound in fact - before settling down to the normal quiet exhaust note. On the road and under any acceleration it does not cause any issue.
- Front tyres in good condition, many miles still left in the tread. Typically these last 40k with my driving. I'm now on the third set. NB. This tyre size is becoming harder to find.
- Rear Tyres - see MOT advisory, may need replacing in 10k of so. Typically rear tyres have lasted 25k with my driving, I'm on my 4th set.
- Rear suspension dampers were replaced in 2016 after MOT failure with OEM parts.
- Both Rear tie rods replaced after one failed (not whilst on the road thankfully).
Replacement Parts: this list is not exhaustive, but I believe includes all major value items, many of which have been mentioned above. I have not listed all tyres/discs/brake pads etc replacements, only the most recent.
- Aug 2025 - replacement Lamp Switch, LED conversion kit for internal switches (not fully completed)
- Aug 2025 - alternate front bonnet release cable (not fitted) - the original footwell cable release is still functional, but the new one fits into the driver's door hinge, so is easier to operate, without climbing into the car.
- Jul 2025 - replacement LED reversing lamp and headlights
- Nov 2023 - replacement heater fitted - the excellent T7 Design - a vast improvement on the original heater.
- Jan 2022 - New Discs and Pads all round
- Nov 2021 - replacement Soft Top Bar - from EliseParts.com
- May 2021 - replacement battery - YUASA 12v
- Apr 2021 - replacement Soft Top Tensioner Cable
- Nov 2018 - New Bridgestone Potenza 175/55R17 RE040 Front Tyres (OEM) - @ 88,000 miles - should be good for another 30k miles
- Sep 2016 - Replacement Rear Shock Absorbers (OEM)
- Sep 2015 - New Bridgestone Potenza 225/45R17 RE040 Rear Tyres (OEM) @76,000 miles - as mentioned above this year I received an advisory on the low tread on the nearside rear tyre so may need replacing soonish.
- Jun 2014 - replacement coolant header tank
- Oct 2011 - replacement Tie-Rods (rear near and off side)
- Oct 2005 - replacement handbrake cable
Recalls - all recalls from Vauxhall have been adhered to:2006 - Replacement of rear Alloy Road Wheels2002 - Replacement of Drivers Airbag???? - Rerouting of Brake Vacuum pipe
I think that's about it, but contact me with any questions you have. Thanks for reading this far and happy bidding. On 29-Aug-26 at 17:22:26 BST, seller added the following information:
29 Aug 2026 - Apologies, on double checking, the car is not fitted with LED headlights, just the standard H1 and H7 halogens 12v/55w. I recall looking at getting some at the time, but clearly did not do so. There now appears UK MOT problems with retrofitting LED's into Halogen designed units, so can't quickly get some to fit for you. Bob
On 30-Aug-26 at 13:22:28 BST, seller added the following information:Following a request I have added a video of a cold start to the car. The car has been in the garage since the listing began as can be seen by the odometer. The video shows the instrument cluster as ignition is turned on, all the lights illuminate, the speedo and rev counter recalibrate to zero. The trip , odometer, fuel gauge, and temperature come on. As the engine is cold the temperature gauge switches off, as do some of the warning lights. This is absolutely as designed. The starter button is pressed , the engine fires up, (no throttle used), and all but the parking brake warning light go out. The exhaust/manifold noise, as stated earlier, is a little throaty at the start, particularly from above the engine bay, and partly due to the automatic choke. As I complete my tour of the car (sorry had to clip bits of that to meet eBay's 1 min limit), I return to the instrument cluster and the revs/choke has settled down to normal tick-over level. Temp gauge activates at about 70degC.
On 04-Sep-26 at 12:39:26 BST, seller added the following information:An eagled eyed watcher has pointed out something that I was previously unaware of, but which may influence your decision to bid, or what bid limit you might set yourself. There is a little damage to the Front Nearside Wheel Rim, the rim is slightly flattened off the circular, and projects out slightly. I've added two photo's to attempt to show this, and it is also visible on one of the earlier photo's of this wheel. To me it looks like damage from the last tyre change, as the rest of the rim is in good condition. The tyre maintains it's pressure well. Anyway rather you knew this now than find out later.
