THE LISTING
About this vehicle
Difficult decision, as I’ve decided to sell the one I’d probably rather keep. 1971 1600 GT XLR. I bought this lovely old car, a few years ago, as an unfinished project; basically a rolling shell with everything piled inside. I’d bought it sight unseen and couldn’t believe how solid and original it was when it arrived. Never intended it to be a show car - and it isn’t - though I dare say it could get pretty close if someone was of a mind. Anyway, it’s been out just twice, this year, and there’s a newcomer arrived with a few more creature comforts so I have to part with one. Mechanically, it is really good. Reconditioned 711M crossflow, from a Mexico, which runs superbly and with excellent oil pressure - no rattles or smoke. Super smooth transmission with no rattles, squeaks, whines. New water pump, new battery with correct terminals, fuel pump, starter motor, alternator. All brakes rebuilt or renewed. Servo fully reconditioned. Brand new, complete wiring room to original spec - cost a small fortune. Car drives exceptionally well though, to be spot on, I’d either replace the carburettor or have it rebuilt. I don’t think it’s the correct Weber for the year of the car. The bodywork needed very little welding as the car has obviously been well rust protected from new. Boot floor, inner wings, wing rails, all original as is 95% of the rest of the car’s structure. The n/s front wing was replaced with a really good, used steel one. The o/s was repaired, where it meets the scuttle, with a cut from another wing. Ideally, eventually, this would be replaced, as the gap isn’t the best. A new vinyl roof and headlining were fitted after being given a glass-out respray in tawny brown metallic. Very good chrome. The interior is pretty good but there are a couple of splits in the top of the driver’s seat. Good dash and carpet. The door pulls are wrong for the age of the car. Everything works except the period radio and it needs a fuel tank sender unit. All new tyres. Exhaust is mild steel but no rot. Can arrange delivery. £11250 Hartlepool. 07799693555Ignore the oil on the driveway as it’s from an engine I collected in my van, this week, which fell over and the stuff is pouring out of both side doors. The Capri has no leaks whatsoever.Vehicle specification
